Study: Activated Immune System Works in Some Cancer Patients

Activated Immune system attacks scaffolding around cancer cells causing tumor to fall apart

In 2010, about 43,140 people were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, according to the American Cancer Society; 36,800 died. According to an article on WebMD that discusses a new study on Pancreatic Cancer and treatment, “A novel approach to pancreatic cancer treatment that activates the immune system works in some patients.”

The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) is very encouraged by studies like these which show improvement in the survival of cancer patients.

Researcher Robert H. Vonderheide, MD, DPhil, an associate professor of medicine in the division of hematology/oncology and the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute, University of Pennsylvania said, “The therapy is an antibody. Instead of binding to the cancer, this antibody binds to a molecule in the immune system, and that is CD40. Next, the immune system is activated, allowing it to attack the so-called scaffolding around the cancer cells. The scaffolding is destroyed and the tumor falls apart. The process is somewhat like attacking a brick wall by dissolving the mortar in the wall.”

The new approach extended overall survival by nearly two months compared to conventional treatments.

Another study discussed in the scientific journal Acta Oncologica, showed how treatment with the natural antiviral supplement Gene-Eden-VIR caused a complete recovery of the immune system and an amazing 34% reduction in tumor size in a patient with pancreatic cancer. The study was conducted at the Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease by Hanan Polansky and Ido Dafni,

Acta Oncologica is a leading scientific journal in clinical oncology and related disciplines, and the official journal of the five Nordic oncological societies.

The CBCD has long advocated the need for people to maintain a healthy immune system. The immune system is key in the body’s defense against many different chronic diseases, including cancers such as pancreatic cancer.

According to the WebMD website:

“If you’re among the 1.5 million people in the United States diagnosed with cancer each year, you may be considering taking vitamins and supplements for cancer. Supplements, herbs, and extracts are increasingly used in integrative medicine to:

Help strengthen the immune system
Help ease side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.”

In simple terms, medical experts today highly recommend taking supplements to help patients fight cancer.
